Luleå’s ore port – the place where sea, forest and nature meet works, huge machines and red dust. The iron ore’s hub and last stop before it is shipped out to large parts of the world. LKAB’s southernmost plant, and home to the group’s headquarters.

It was in Luleå that our first LKAB visit took place, and already at the entrance to the plant we were greeted by the two sacred words: safety first. It is a recurring theme, a motto, a statement – and applies not only to Luleå, but to all LKAB’s facilities.

LKAB is not only leading the global transformation of the iron and steel industry, but is also at the forefront of workplace safety.

Fiberglass – part of the steel giant.

At the Kiruna plant, LKAB and our partner GMKAB have begun a shift from steel gratings to our corrosion-free fiberglass gratings. Of course, not everywhere, it is after all the headquarters of steel. But in particularly exposed areas with surfaces exposed to a lot of water, steam, chemicals and salt, there are many advantages to using fiberglass instead of steel – especially from a safety perspective.

The plant in Luleå has also realized the benefits of our fiberglass products. They have invested in anti-slip and contrast markings and installed stair nosings, steps and rungs to further increase safety in the plant’s industrial premises.

LKAB is at the forefront on many levels – workplace safety is only one part. But in our eyes, that’s exactly what makes LKAB a true leader.
