Old is the new new.
Old becomes new.
When Uppsala City Hall was built in 1975, the building was never quite finished. Now, almost 50 years later, the building finally has the look it deserves: sustainable, well thought-out and unique to say the least.
Large parts of the 60-year-old building remain. In fact, the original building has guided the outcome of the rebuild, and much of the original detailing – what gives the house its character – has been retained. In addition, the new house has become much larger and yet more energy efficient, so much so that it meets the Swedish National Board of Housing, Building and Planning’s near-zero energy requirements. You see, this is not just any building. It’s the 2022 Building of the Year.
Local collaboration.
Peab was commissioned to lead the construction and many local actors have been called in. Including us, who were commissioned to provide the building with tactile pathways. A building that is rebuilt, added to or constructed from scratch must be adapted for accessibility, and this is perhaps especially true of a building like this – the municipality’s headquarters.
We are pleased to be part of the local workforce that has been working to meet the accessibility requirements in the best possible way. What pleases us most is that we were contacted early in the process, which for us is proof that accessibility is taken seriously – and seen as an important part of a modern, sustainable building.
In this project we have:
- On behalf of Stenentreprenader, provided the building with tactile pathways, in accordance with the architect’s drawings.
- Delivered and installed the products according to both the drawing and the accessibility requirements.
