Östermalm market hall.

Tactile handrails and brass contrast markings.

Bring back the history.

Back to the future.

Since 1888, Östermalm’s market hall has been a vibrant trading center and a natural meeting place for both Stockholmers and tourists. But in 130 years, society has changed. Our needs are different, and our quest to be inclusive has led to stricter regulations on accessibility. So when the City of Stockholm decided to embark on the most extensive renovation in the building’s history, all parties involved were in full agreement: it was time to restore the market hall to its former glory – and enhance the level of experience for ALL visitors, with accessibility at the top of the list.

Part of the interior design.

In many places, tactile aids such as handrails and contrast markings are often included just because they are required, and you can clearly see that they are designed to be ‘as invisible as possible’ to those who don’t need them. In Östermalm’s market hall, it’s just the opposite. All the furnishings, be it wall paint, wrought iron details, large tables or small buttons, are part of the whole – as are the tactile aids. The brass cues and contrasting markings take their place and are a natural part of the interior – exactly what the architects were aiming for.

We are delighted to be part of such a historic building. Above all, we are happy to have been able to contribute to the City of Stockholm’s vision of becoming a diverse city for all, and the architectural firm Tengbom’s desire to include tactile aids as a natural part of the building.

In the project we have:

  • Developed bespoke brass handrails and contrast markings that are in line with the building’s vision and conform to the architect’s brief.
  • Delivered and installed the products according to the drawing.
  • Followed up the work to ensure the quality of the installation.

Tactile brass walkways act as signposts, leading the way through the building, past traders and to key destinations.
The brass blends nicely with the floor, while providing a clear contrast against the dark stone.
The contrast markings give an exclusive feel and draw attention to level differences in the floor.
Outdoor stairs and level differences have been marked with contrasting dots in thermal paper.
